Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By using the App, you acknowledge that you have read and understood it. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
1. Overview
Orator is a public-speaking and voice-training application that records your voice, applies automated and AI-based analysis to that voice, and provides educational feedback, lessons, drills, and scenario-based practice. This Privacy Policy describes the information we handle and the choices you have.
The App is owned and operated by Gregory Ovis, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. For any privacy question or request, contact us at gregory@theoratorapp.com.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Personal Information
- Email (from Apple or Google sign-in)
- Authentication identifier
- Device information
- Country/region for app settings
2.2 Voice Data & Recordings
When you use a feature that requires you to speak (lessons, drills, voice practice, AI scenarios, debate mode, and similar features), the App records your voice from your device’s microphone. This audio is used solely to analyze your speech (such as pace, fluency, filler words, clarity, confidence, pronunciation, and similar characteristics) in order to provide speech-coaching feedback and recommendations. We do not use your voice for identity verification, voice-print matching, or biometric identification.
Retention: Recordings are retained only as long as necessary to provide the requested features. Audio is processed for analysis and is deleted unless you choose to save a session for progress tracking. You can delete saved sessions at any time, and all voice data is deleted when you delete your account.
2.3 Speech Metrics & History
We generate and store:
- Speech scores
- Transcripts of your practice sessions
- Trend data and improvement history
- Lesson, drill, and routine recommendations
These are stored in our database (Supabase) and deleted when you delete your account.
2.4 App Usage Data
Automatically collected:
- Feature usage
- Errors & crashes
- Non-identifying technical logs
2.5 Analytics
We use privacy-respecting product analytics to understand how users interact with the App so we can improve it over time. These tools collect device, usage, and event data; they do not collect your raw voice recordings. We do not use the iOS advertising identifier (IDFA) and do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
2.6 Subscription Information
Apple provides us with purchase confirmation metadata so the App can unlock paid features. We do not collect or store payment card information.
2.7 Advertising Measurement (Meta)
To measure how well our own ads perform, the App shares limited app-event data — app launches, in-app purchases, and device information — with Meta Platforms for advertising measurement. This data is not linked to your identity in the App. We do not use the iOS advertising identifier (IDFA) and do not use App Tracking Transparency tracking; Meta’s Aggregated Event Measurement is designed to work without tracking you across other companies’ apps or websites. For users in the European Union and similar jurisdictions, we rely on our legitimate interest in measuring our own advertising as the legal basis for this sharing. Meta processes this data as an independent controller under Meta’s privacy policy.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your data to:
- Analyze your speech and generate coaching insights
- Display your progress over time
- Provide personalized lessons, drills, and routines
- Authenticate users
- Manage subscriptions
- Improve app performance
- Measure the performance of our own advertising
- Ensure security and prevent misuse
We do not sell your data and do not use it to build third-party marketing profiles. The only advertising-related use is the limited app-event sharing with Meta to measure our own ads, described in Section 2.7.
4. AI Processing
Orator uses third-party AI and speech services to transcribe your recordings and generate scores, feedback, and practice responses. When you record audio, it is transmitted securely to one or more of these providers — which may include OpenAI, Microsoft Azure, Groq, Deepgram, Cartesia, and Modal — for processing only.
After analysis, your transcripts and metrics are stored in our database for the purpose of tracking your progress over time. We do not grant third-party AI providers permission to use your recordings for training or external purposes unless inherently required by their platform for inference.
AI results may be inaccurate or incomplete and are not intended for medical, clinical, or professional use.
5. Data Storage & Retention
Account data, recordings you choose to save, transcripts, and metrics are stored on our infrastructure providers (primarily Supabase, with backend hosting on Fly.io).
Retention rules:
- Voice recordings: Processed for analysis, then deleted unless you save a session; saved recordings are retained until you delete them or your account
- Speech metrics & transcripts: Stored until you delete your account
- Account data: Deleted upon account deletion
- Crash logs & analytics: Standard provider retention policies
6. Data Deletion
You may delete your account anytime through the App. When you delete your account:
- All saved recordings
- All speech scores and transcripts
- All lessons, drills, and routines tied to your account
- All historical progress data
- All personal account information
…are deleted permanently from our database and associated storage systems. Some information may persist briefly in routine backups until those backups rotate out on our standard schedule. This action cannot be undone.
7. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We share data only with:
- Supabase— authentication, database, and storage
- Fly.io— backend hosting
- Apple & Google— sign-in and authentication
- Superwall— paywall and subscription management
- OpenAI, Microsoft Azure, Groq, Deepgram, Cartesia, Modal — AI and speech processing (for inference only)
- Meta Platforms— advertising measurement for our own ads (limited app-event data only; no IDFA, no cross-app tracking — see Section 2.7)
Apart from the limited app-event data shared with Meta for advertising measurement, no information is shared with advertisers or social networks. Each provider operates under its own terms and privacy policy and is not authorized to use your data for its own purposes. With the exception of Meta, which processes measurement data as an independent controller, each of these providers is contractually obligated to protect your data with safeguards equivalent to those described in this policy and to process it only on our instructions.
8. Children’s Privacy
Orator is intended for users 13 years and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us for immediate deletion.
9. Security
We implement security measures including encryption in transit, access control, and restricted API access. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute protection.
10. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights including:
- Access to your data
- Correction of inaccurate data
- Data deletion
- Data export (on request)
Deleting your account within the App immediately erases all stored data. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at gregory@theoratorapp.com.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The effective date will be updated accordingly. Continued use of the App constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
